Mapping Your Excel Data

Many people ask for help with this simple function.
With a steady growth in business users of AWhere this summer, we've gotten many queries in our User Forum about the basics.

If you're searching for the simple way to make a dynamic map out of your spreadsheet, first download the Free Trial of AWhere Express

Then import your spreadsheet (it's really easy).  Next you make what we call a Data Connection:

Simply put, a Data Connection creates a dynamic (live) linkage between a map layer in AWhere and some external data source, be it an MS Excel spreadsheet, a .csv file, a table or query in an MS Access Database, or a table or query in any of various other types of databases such as SQL Server, Oracle, etc.  (Note that with AWhere Express, you can connect only to ‘flat files’ (.xls, .csv, and .dbf)…but with AWhere Professional, you can connect to databases, in addition to the flat-file types as well.)  With a live linkage established between the map and the external data source, you can visualize the data on the map by coloring the map features according to the data values in the table, labeling the map features using the data values from the table, putting charts on the map features using the data values from the table, graphing the data, etc (examples are shown at the bottom of this post). In addition to establishing the data connection initially, after that data connection is established, you also have the ability to make subsequent edits and updates to the contents of the external data source, and then simply ‘refresh’ the data connection…that will immediately make the newly edited data available for mapping.

If you want more detail, here's the rest of the info on this important first step towards increased productivity.
