LI Goes 3-D; Global AWhereness Just Got More Nuance

Google Earth announced their web-based API, allowing richer geo-analytics.
Although my colleagues may disagree, I still think it's cool.

At yesterday's I/O Developers Conference, Google announced that their 3-D  platform, Google Earth, is now available as a web API, meaning that you can run a version of it on your own website.

Just as AWhere is moving towards a web-based SaaS model, Google reaffirmed their committment that "the browser is the platform," by which they mean that more and more work is moving from software to the web.  While this is my second controversial statement of the blog post, there is ample evidence that they are on the right track.

What does this mean to you?  The fundamental value of data visualization, geo-analytics and location intelligence will continue to grow, become more rich and detailed, more generally availbalbe and continue to transform data and information into knowledge and understanding.

The question, as Curt alluded to last week, is how long the transition from competitive advantage to mandatory feature actually takes.
